UPDATE: (Release from CCS) -- Columbus Alternative High School (CAHS) will hold a series of fundraisers and donation collections to help the family of sophomore Acairia Watkins meet her funeral expenses.  The CAHS family was informed of Acairia's passing on Monday; she passed away from injuries sustained in a house fire April 5.  The impact of her loss is not only felt by her friends at CAHS, but also her family, including her one-month-old daughter (whom she saved from the fire).

"Acairia was an amazing young lady.  She inspired all who knew her.  She was resilient, focused and in spite of challenging life circumstances, she held her head high and remained committed both to her academics and to her future," said Sharee N. Wells, Principal, Columbus Alternative High School.  "Throughout her freshman and sophomore years, she maintained honor roll and planned on attending the DeVry Advantage Academy in the fall.  Her interests included playing the viola with the orchestra, taking care of her daughter and spending time with friends and family.  Her beautiful smile and positive presence will be greatly missed."

Acairia was a member of the CAHS orchestra.  On Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m., the orchestra dedicated their show and all proceeds from both ticket and concessions sales to the family and Acairia's newborn daughter.  There was a slide show, and the Watkins family was present.

Funeral and burial arrangements are planned for Monday, April 22, at 1 p.m., at Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Services, located at 720 E. Long Street, Columbus.  Donations to help defer funeral expenses can also be sent directly to Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Services, in Acairia's name.
