COLUMBUS -- Several organizations teamed up Thursday at Veteran's Memorial to count the number of homeless people in Franklin County.
The ninth-annual count is conducted each year to assist agencies in developing the services that benefit the county's homeless population.
More than 40 social service agencies participated in the event, helping to put a new number to the problem of homelessness in Franklin County, while also offering services and community resources, such as healthcare, housing, food, and employment assistance.
The 2012 count found 182 people living in the outdoors in the county, while another 1252 stayed in emergency or transitional shelters, according to the Community Shelter Board. Overall last year, approximately 8800 people spent at least one night in a Franklin County shelter -- the highest in the 9-year history of the survey.
It will take approximately three weeks to tally the results of the 2013 count.
