Controversial Columbus Landlord Sentenced to Jail

COLUMBUS -- A controversial landlord was sentenced to a year in jail Monday, after being found guilty of violating his probation.
Environmental Court Judge Harland Hale previously ordered Sam Vazirani to get rid of all his properties, but determined the landlord failed to do so after a parade of witnesses testified that he collected rent after transferring property ownership to others.
"There is no question in my mind that these were sham transfers designed to dispose of the real estate and collect on it later,” Judge Hale said in a statement.
Vazirani became known to many central Ohioans after a fire at one of his Franklinton properties killed three people in December, 2011. That house had been ordered vacant, and lacked proper heat service at the time of the fire.
Vazirani was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs after hearing his sentence. After his release from jail, he will be placed on probation until 2017.
