UPDATE (08:30 3/28/2013):  Brittany Jeffers has died for her injuries.

CIRCLEVILLE - Family members say Brittany Jeffers was brutally attacked after intervening in a fight outside of her home.

It happened at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday near Washington St. and Walnut St. in Circleville, which is in Pickaway County.

Jeffers sustained severe head injuries during the attack, according to her mother.  Jeffers was rushed to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where she's said to be in critical condition.

Police still don't know exactly what happened to cause such severe injuries, but witnesses describe a horrific scene.

"She was just beaten and it was horrible," said Leanna Moore, who lives near where the beating happened.  "It was probably one of the worst things I've ever seen," she added.

Circleville Police say a fight broke out between 21-year-old Brittany Jeffers sister and people living in a house nearby over the report of an alleged burglary.

Witnesses say Jeffers rushed to help her sister and the other people involved took aim at her.

"After they hit her, she was unconscious and they started kicking her in the head," Moore said.

The mother of two was rushed to the hospital.

"Her organs are working, but her brain isn't," said Emily Jeffers, the victim's mother.  "Right now, they consider her brain dead.

Brittany's mother says doctor's are doing everything they can to try and save her little girl.

"They're going to go in.  They don't know where the bleeding is coming from," she said.

Police are looking for up to a half dozen suspects.  At the time this story was written, no charges had been filed.
