CHILLICOTHE (Jen French) -- A woman says pit bulls attacked her not once, but twice. The second time, she said her chihuahua was attacked and killed. Now, she’s worried about who the dogs will hurt next.
Chillicothe Police said the incident happened Thursday afternoon in the 600 block of Orange Street.
"I would never have taken my dog by that house if I knew those dogs were out there,” Sharon Betts said.
Police say a neighbor, James Sawyer, let one of his pit bulls outside to use the bathroom. They said there wasn’t a fence on the property and the dog wasn’t on a leash. Officers say the chihuahua was bit. Police charged the pit bull owner, James Sawyer, with having a dog at large.
A vet told Betts her one year old chihuahua wouldn’t make it.
"He had internal injuries and they had to put him to sleep,” Betts said.
ABC 6/FOX 28 learned that Sawyer owns three pit bulls. After an encounter Betts had with his dogs a year ago, Sawyer appeared in court for owning more than one pit bull, not restraining the dogs and not having liability insurance on them. A judge dismissed all charges but one. After that incident in April 2012, Sawyer was only found guilty for not restraining a dog.
ABC 6/FOX 28 also contacted the area dog warden, who said their agency can’t seize an animal without a court order.
ABC 6/FOX 28 was unable to reach the public defender who represented Sawyer for his 2012 charges.
After Thursday’s dog attack, Sawyer was ordered to appear in court on May 10, 2013 and keep his pets restrained.
