BLUE JACKETS: Gaborik Faces Surgery

Updated: Thursday, May 2 2013, 07:18 AM EDT
COLUMBUS -- Columbus Blue
Jackets forward Marian Gaborik has an abdominal injury that will require
surgery and a recovery period of three to four weeks, the club announced
today.  Due to the injury, Gaborik will be unable to represent Slovakia at
the upcoming IIHF World Championships.

“Marian experienced some soreness towards the end of the
season and after undergoing his exit physical and further examination today, it
was decided that surgery is the best option for a quick and full recovery,”
said Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations John Davidson.  “Marian
will have the surgery and after a three to four week recovery period will be
able to resume off-season training.”

Gaborik tallied 12-15-27 with 14 penalty minutes and a -3
plus/minus rating in 47 games with the Blue Jackets and New York Rangers this
season.  Acquired by Columbus on April 3, he picked up 3-5-8, six penalty
minutes and was 5 in 12 games to help the Jackets post a 9-3-0 mark over the
final 12 games of the 2012-13 campaign.  A three-time All-Star, he has
registered 336-338-674, 404 penalty minutes and a cumulative 89 plus/minus
rating in 769 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Rangers and Minnesota
Wild.

The Blue Jackets wrapped up the 2012-13 season with a 3-1
win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.  The club posted a
24-17-7 record (55 pts.) this season, which was the highest winning percentage
in franchise history (.573).
