Hilltop Woman Robbed During Good Deed Attempt

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 11:42 PM EDT
COLUMBUS -- A Hilltop woman is fighting back after being scammed by a cold water con.

Maria, 77, told ABC 6/FOX 28 a woman stole her wallet filled with cash and credit cards after knocking on her door and asking for a cold drink.

“She came to ask for water. I said 'o.k.,'” said Maria, who is on a fixed income and receives Meals on Wheels for food assistance.

“You try to be friendly,” she said. “Can’t these people respect people’s ages?”

Maria said, while she was pouring water in the kitchen, the woman snuck into her home and rifled through her purse.

The thief stole hundreds of dollars Maria desperately needs to pay her rent and medical bills, as well as family photos and pictures from her homeland of Guatemala.

Columbus police are now investigating the bizarre crime, which has led Maria to vow to never again open the door for a stranger in need.
