Statue Stolen from Highland West Community Garden

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 11:42 PM EDT
COLUMBUS -- Neighbors are hoping for the return of a sculpture created specifically for a Columbus community garden.

The sculpture, called The Flame, disappeared from the Highland West Community Garden in early April.

Highland West Neighborhood Association President Geoffrey Phillips told ABC 6/FOX 28 the 5 ft. tall statue was pried off its base, which remains locked to the ground.

The sculpture was purchased with grant money, and was intended to add beauty to the garden, which contains 30 plots.

The neighborhood association has filed a police report as part of its effort to retrieve the statue, but Phillips said the person or people responsible for the theft can avoid any legal trouble by simply returning the sculpture.

"We hope whoever took it [will] bring it back, and no questions will be asked," he said.

Police hope security footage will shed light on the statue's disappearance. Anyone with information about the theft is encouraged to contact Columbus police.
