WHITEHALL -- A suspect is facing charges for a violent purse-snatching that is garnering attention across the country.
Bertie Burkley appeared in a Franklin Co. courtroom Wednesday, charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault for an April 19 attack on a shopper in a Kroger parking lot.
Surveillance footage shows the 37-year-old victim being punched and robbed, then dragged across the parking lot as she held on to the getaway car being driven by the suspect.
That car, which belongs to Jimmy and Rita Love, was stolen from the couple's apartment complex on the day of the robbery.
Police spotted Burkley, 50, driving the car on Friday night, and subsequently arrested him for auto theft. Investigators did not connect Burkley to the purse-snatching until one of the Loves' neighbors called police after watching a feature on the robbery that aired on Good Morning America.
Burkley confessed to the purse-snatching under questioning, according to police. Rita Love told ABC 6/FOX 28 investigators found a crack pipe in her car after it was recovered, along with a large amount of snack food in the glove compartment.
