MIFFLIN TOWNSHIP (Jen French/Ken Hines) -- Franklin County Commissioners plan to demolish more homes in their effort to remove blighted, abandoned houses from the Columbus area.
Commissioners are teaming with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Committee and several residents to get rid of 20 vacant homes that have attracted crime and pests.
Fourteen homes have been torn down since August through the program, which is funded with federal grant money. Six more demolitions are planned.
Mifflin Twp. Code Enforcement Officer Steven Blake visits vacant homes almost daily. He told ABC 6/FOX 28 the county is able to demolish the structures because of liens placed on the properties due to unpaid taxes.
Franklin Co. Commissioner Marilyn Brown hopes to see new homes built on the properties after the demolition work is complete.
