Blind Runner Told to Stay off Newark Track

Updated: Wednesday, March 6 2013, 08:30 PM EST
NEWARK -- Operators of a central Ohio YMCA say a blind man must stay off their running track after hurting himself and others.

Bob Jutzi had been running on the Newark track three times a week, but is now relegated to a treadmill unless he's accompanied by a partner.

The YMCA's CEO, Ed Bohren, told ABC 6/FOX 28 he made the move after Jutzi hurt himself and other runners in multiple on-track collisions, including one incident that sent a person to the hospital.

Bohren said the decision to remove Jutzi from the track was only made after other attempts to prevent collisions failed, including posting signs and giving Jutzi a bright vest to wear while running.

Jutzi said he doesn't mind running on the treadmill, but would like to include some track-work in his exercise routine. He says he can't join another gym because the Y is the only facility he can reach via bus.
