Shirley's Sweet Potato Pie

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 12:50 AM EDT
COLUMBUS -- When you think of Fall, one of the most delicious things to come to mind is sweet potato pie. One local woman is baking and selling them all year round.

"Number one the taste must be there, you know the ingredients got to be just right also the smoothness the texture its gotta be perfect," Shirley Locke said.

Shirley's been making her sweet potato pies by hand since she was a child, right next by her mother's side.

"We baked these pies a long time ago and as a little girl we would bake for the whole family, I'm from a very large family and it just reminds me of her," she said.

Shirley's used to carrying more than a spatula. She retired from a more than 30-year-long career as a detective with Columbus police. Now she's made baking her full-time career, which the force also enjoys. She's selling pies at farmers markets and at Easton and Shirley's second career is sweeter than ever before.

"As a detective I met a lot of people good people bad people you name it but as a baker I meet good people all the time and my job now is just to make sure I take care of my customers," she said.

And she does that well. If you want to try Shirley's pie, contact her at
