COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala) -- After a storm of controversy, Veterans' Memorial officially shut its doors Thursday.
Franklin County dedicated the landmark on Veterans' Day back in 1955. Now, county employees are getting it prepared for the wrecking ball.
They sent letters out last week to nearly 100 veteran agencies asking who wants what from the facility - like chairs, audio equipment, and wall mounted water fountains. Fifty plaques naming the county's fallen soldiers dating back to the Revolutionary War will come down next week for preservation. The county is still trying to figure out how to move the bronze statue of Arnold Schwarzenegger to its new home at the convention center on High Street.

Once inventory is out, and the office of Veterans' Services is completely moved to its new location on East Broad Street, demolition will begin. That's expected to happen later this year.Veterans Memorial Closes Its Doors for Good
