COLUMBUS (Chelsea Spears) -- As the school year quickly approaches, drivers are being reminded to be alert and aware of stopped school buses.

"All Ohioans play a part in making it safe for students to load and unload school buses," said Patrol superintendent Colonel Paul A. Pride.

In a Thursday press release, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds drivers to stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus while its lights are flashing and its arm is extended. Motorists should not being driving again until the bus has started moving.

More than 4,000 drivers  from 2011-2013 were convicted of failing to stop for a school bus that was loading or dropping off passengers, the press release states.

"Motorists must be cautious when driving near school buses, and parents should teach their children to stop and look both ways before crossing the street," Colonel Pride said. "The Patrol will do our part by watching for motorists driving recklessly."

OSHP reminds drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for these school bus stops. They are reminding people to be patient and never pass a stopped school bus.
