GENOA TOWNSHIP (Steve Levine) – Fred Alborn got a big surprise when he and his wife were vacationing in the Finger Lakes in New York state a few weeks ago. Thieves broke into their Genoa Township home and stole expensive jewelry.

“They came in right through the window, in the middle of the day,” said Alborn, “very violated, the first time something like this has happened.”

The Alborns are not alone. Genoa Police tell ABC 6/FOX 28 within the past few weeks, three homes have been broke into while families were out of town. Burglars are busting in during the day and walking away with credit cards and jewelry.

“You want to keep up with appearances” said Lt. Ron Thompson with Genoa Township Police.  He tells us when you are out of town always ask a neighbor to bring in your mail, newspapers, and bring in your garbage. Thompson suggests you put timers on lights in and around your home.

Genoa Township Police is one of many law enforcement agencies around Central Ohio that will drive past your property while you are on vacation, if you contact them.

“Let us know when you are going to be out of town, we will check frequently,” said Thompson.

A free program, Alborn says he plans to take advantage of, the next time he leaves town.

“We don’t want this to happen again,” said Alborn.Burglars Hitting Homes while Families are out of Town
