Cubs versus Phils in the "Friendly Confines"
UNDATED (AP) -- An afternoon game in Wrigley Field has the ball rolling on a full major league schedule taking us into the holiday weekend. The National League Central-leading Cubs sent 4-and-1 Rich Harden to the mound to face 1-and-0 Joe Blanton of Philadelphia. Chicago is riding a six-game winning streak and holds a six-and-a-half-game lead over second-place Milwaukee as they prepare to host a Philadelphia club they beat 6-4 in last night's series opener. That dropped the Phillies a full game behind first-place New York in the NL East. The Mets are at Florida tonight. The Brewers, who hold a three-and-a-half-game lead over St. Louis in the senior circuit's wild-card race, are at Pittsburgh, while the Cardinals play at Houston. The Dodgers drag a seven-game losing streak into the Valley of the Sun to take on NL West leader Arizona. The Diamondbacks have dropped four in a row but still hold a three-and-a-half-game lead over second-place L.A. The rest of the NL slate has San Francisco at Cincinnati, Washington hosting Atlanta and Colorado playing at San Diego. American League East leader Tampa Bay holds a four-and-a-half-game lead over Boston headed into tonight's outing against visiting Baltimore. The Rays are a league-best 49-and-19 at home. The Red Sox bring a two-and-a-half-game wild-card lead over Minnesota into their contest against visiting Chicago. The AL Central-leading White Sox begin play in Beantown with a game-and-a-half advantage over the Twins, who are at Oakland tonight. Also on this evening's AL schedule, you've got Toronto at the New York Yankees, Detroit home to Kansas City, Cleveland putting a 10-game winning streak on the line against visiting Seattle and Texas at the AL West-leading L.A. Angels.
Replay for all
UNDATED (AP) -- Major League Baseball implemented its new replay policy last night on a limited basis. It was set up to function in three ballparks where they played series openers: Oakland, Anaheim and Chicago's Wrigley Field. Today, and for the rest of the season, it will be used at every stadium for every game. Umps can use replays to aid decisions only on whether potential home runs cleared fences, were fair balls or were interfered with by fans.

Storm concerns lead to earlier kickoff in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU has moved up the kickoff time of tomorrow's season opener against visiting Appalachian State because of concerns over the approach of Tropical Storm Gustav. A spokesman for the school's board says Governor Bobby Jindal's office asked for the change from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. . Spokesman Charles Zewe says the switch was required because of concerns over traffic, as evacuees are expected to be heading north through Baton Rouge.
Buckeyes' Tressel getting a raise
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has agreed to contract revisions that will make him the highest-paid football coach in the Big Ten Conference. The school says Tressel's compensation beginning in February will be 3.5 million dollars, a 1-million-dollar increase. Tressel will receive annual increases of 3 percent to 4 percent. He has a 73-and-16 record at Ohio State and is under contract until 2013. Tressel begins his eighth season as coach of the second-ranked Buckeyes. The team opens tomorrow at home against Youngstown State.
Ginobili needs surgery
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Spurs guard Manu Ginobili says he needs arthroscopic surgery to repair a ligament injury in his left ankle. But the 31-year-old basketball player doesn't know when he'll have the surgery or who will do it. Ginobili was hurt during the NBA playoffs, and San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich had urged him not to compete in the Olympics unless the injury improved. Ginobili did play in Beijing but was forced to leave Argentina's semifinals loss to the U.S. squad early due to the injury. Argentina went on to defeat Lithuania in the bronze medal game with Ginobili watching from the bench in street clothes.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers backup quarterback Matt Moore doesn't have any broken bones or damaged ligaments in his left leg after a hard hit in a preseason loss to Pittsburgh. A team spokesman says tests came back negative and Moore will be listed as day to day. It's uncertain if he'll be ready to play in the season opener on September 7th at San Diego. Moore was hit late in the third quarter last night when two blitzing Steelers went unblocked. Safety Anthony Smith went in low to take out Moore at his legs. The Steelers won 19-16.
