IN THE NEWS: A WARNING ABOUT CELL PHONES
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- You've probably heard a lot of talk over the years about a possible link between the use of cell phones and cancer. But when the talk comes from the head of a leading cancer research institute, it might be something to take note of. The warning is coming from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, head of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He has issued a warning to his faculty and staff urging them to limit their use of cell phones because of the possible cancer risk. There have been numerous studies that have said there is no link between using mobile phones and cancer. But Herberman says early unpublished data is causing him to issue the alert. He notes it takes too long to get answers from science, and instead of waiting to see what future studies say, people should take action now, especially to protect children. In his memo, the doctor says children should use cell phones only for emergencies because their brains are still developing.
