Five reported dead in suspected U.S. airstrike

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) -- Intelligence officials in Pakistan say five people are dead in a suspected U.S. airstrike close to the border with Afghanistan.

The officials say missiles apparently fired by unmanned drones hit a house in north Waziristan late Saturday. It's the latest in a series of attacks in the region, where top al-Qaida leaders are believed to be hiding out. But the Pakistani officials identify the dead as tribesmen and say there's no indication any foreign militants were hit.

Initial reports had put the death toll at three, but searchers found two more bodies in the rubble.

There's been no comment from U.S. officials in Afghanistan. But in recent weeks, the U.S. has grown increasingly impatient with Pakistani efforts to root out extremists in the region. Pakistan this weekend accused the U.S. and Afghanistan of not doing enough to stop Islamic militants from crossing into Pakistan.
